EID’s Commitment to Protecting Natural Resources
For nearly a century, the El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) has been dedicated to protecting and preserving the environment while ensuring reliable water service for our customers. Our commitment to environmental stewardship is embedded in everything we do—from watershed protection and habitat conservation to sustainable water management and hydroelectric power generation.
Watershed Protection and Water Quality
EID manages water resources that originate in the pristine Sierra Nevada watershed. Through rigorous monitoring and conservation programs, we work to safeguard the quality and sustainability of these vital sources. EID collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies to prevent contamination, mitigate wildfire risks, and maintain healthy forested watersheds that support both our water supply and local ecosystems.
Sustainable Water Management
Water efficiency is at the heart of our mission. Over the decades, EID has implemented innovative strategies to reduce water waste and encourage conservation, including:
- Infrastructure upgrades to reduce leaks and improve efficiency
- Customer education programs promoting water-wise landscaping and indoor conservation
- Partnerships with agricultural customers to enhance irrigation efficiency
- Recycling and reusing treated wastewater for non-potable applications
Hydroelectric Power and Renewable Energy
EID operates the El Dorado Hydroelectric Project, a renewable energy source that harnesses the power of water to generate clean electricity. This system not only reduces our reliance on fossil fuels but also plays a critical role in managing water flows for both consumption and environmental needs.
Wildlife and Habitat Conservation
Our district is home to diverse ecosystems that support numerous plant and animal species. EID is committed to responsible land and water management that protects sensitive habitats, including:
- Restoring streambanks and riparian corridors to support fish populations
- Managing aquatic invasive species to preserve native biodiversity
Environmental Compliance: CEQA and NEPA in EID Projects
As a public agency, EID is committed to ensuring that all of its projects comply with state and federal environmental regulations. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) are two critical laws that guide how we assess and mitigate environmental impacts when planning and implementing projects.
- CEQA Compliance: Before EID undertakes a major project—whether it’s infrastructure improvements, water system upgrades, or habitat restoration—we conduct environmental reviews in accordance with CEQA. These evaluations help identify potential environmental impacts and require mitigation measures to protect local ecosystems and communities. CEQA ensures transparency and public involvement, allowing stakeholders to provide input on projects that may affect their environment.
- NEPA Compliance: When EID projects involve federal land, funding, or permits, they must also comply with NEPA. This law requires a thorough environmental review, which can range from a Categorical Exclusion (CE) for minor projects to a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for larger, more complex initiatives. NEPA ensures that federal decision-makers consider environmental consequences before approving projects.
By adhering to CEQA and NEPA requirements, EID remains committed to responsible projects that balance infrastructure needs with environmental protection. Our compliance with these laws reflects our dedication to sustainable planning and reinforces our role as a steward of El Dorado County’s natural resources.
A Legacy of Environmental Responsibility
As we celebrate EID’s centennial, we honor our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. Through forward-thinking policies, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, we will continue to protect our natural resources for generations to come.
